LINZOLIX contains Linezolid, which is a modern antibiotic belonging to the oxazolidinone class. It is a “reserve antibiotic,” meaning it is used specifically to fight highly resistant bacteria like VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci) and MRSA. It works by stopping bacterial protein synthesis at a very early stage, which prevents the bacteria from growing and spreading. It is highly effective for treating complicated skin infections and “Nosocomial” (hospital-acquired) pneumonia.
Linezolid is unique because it can be used for infections that are resistant to almost all other drugs. However, because it is so specialized, it must be used carefully to prevent bacteria from becoming resistant to it as well. Patients on Linezolid should avoid foods high in “tyramine” (like aged cheeses or fermented soy) because it can cause a dangerous spike in blood pressure. Long-term use requires monitoring of blood cell counts, as it can sometimes lower the levels of platelets or red blood cells.
