Neurovia-60 is a specialized medication containing Nimodipine, a calcium channel blocker. Unlike other calcium channel blockers used for high blood pressure, Neurovia is specifically designed to affect the blood vessels in the brain. Its primary use is to prevent brain damage caused by reduced blood flow after a “subarachnoid hemorrhage” (a type of bleeding in the brain). After such a bleed, blood vessels can spasm and narrow (vasospasm), which starves brain tissue of oxygen; Neurovia helps keep these vessels relaxed.
The “60” usually refers to the 60mg dosage. It is a critical medication in neurosurgery and intensive care units. Patients usually take it every four hours for several weeks following a brain bleed. Because it relaxes blood vessels, a common side effect is a drop in blood pressure, so heart rate and BP are monitored constantly. It is vital that this medication is administered exactly as scheduled to maintain a consistent level in the bloodstream, as any lapse could increase the risk of a secondary stroke.
