Piptarix 1.125

Composition

Piperacillin (1 gm) + Tazobactam (0.125 gm) Injection

Description

Piptarix is a combination of two medicines: Piperacillin (an antibiotic) and Tazobactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). This combination is often referred to as “Pip-Tazo.” Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin that kills a wide range of bacteria, while Tazobactam prevents bacteria from using enzymes to destroy the Piperacillin. The 2.25g and 1.125g strengths allow for precise dosing based on the patient’s weight and the severity of the infection.

It is frequently used for “Empiric Therapy,” which means it is started when a patient is very ill with a suspected infection before the lab results are even back. It treats everything from severe pneumonia and skin infections to “Febrile Neutropenia” (fever in patients with very low white blood cell counts). It is highly effective but can only be given via an IV drip. Because it contains a penicillin-type drug, it is critical to ensure the patient does not have a penicillin allergy, as this could cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis.
