Omilix-40 contains Omeprazole, which is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI). In an injectable form, it is used to rapidly reduce the production of stomach acid. It is commonly prescribed in hospitals for patients who are unable to take oral medication and are suffering from severe acid reflux (GERD), gastric ulcers, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by shutting down the “pumps” in the stomach lining that release acid, providing a more stable environment for the stomach and esophagus to heal.
For patients in critical care, Omilix-40 is often used as “stress ulcer prophylaxis.” This means it prevents the stomach from developing ulcers due to the physical stress of a serious illness or surgery. It is generally very safe, but long-term use can occasionally lead to issues with mineral absorption, like magnesium or calcium. Short-term side effects might include a mild headache or diarrhea. It is typically administered as a slow IV injection once a day.
