Manitor G is an osmotic diuretic, frequently used in neurosurgery and emergency medicine. It is primarily used to reduce “Intracranial Pressure” (swelling in the brain) or “Intraocular Pressure” (pressure inside the eye). When a patient has a head injury or a brain bleed, fluid can build up and squeeze the brain against the skull; Manitor G works by drawing that excess water out of the brain tissue and into the bloodstream, where the kidneys can filter it out as urine.
The addition of Glycerin helps enhance this effect while being slightly gentler on the body’s electrolyte balance than pure Mannitol. It is a critical, life-saving medication that is always given via IV. Because it removes so much fluid, doctors must monitor the patient’s blood pressure and kidney function very closely to prevent dehydration or kidney stress. Patients often experience increased thirst or a dry mouth while being treated with this medication.
